The Delta Academy program was named in honor of Dr. Betty Shabazz in recognition of her contributions as an outstanding educator and role model for young women.  Dr. Betty Shabazz was a noted civil rights leader who worked for political, educational and family causes.  She was the widow of the slain civil rights leader Malcolm X.

Catching the Dreams of Tomorrow, Preparing Young Women For the 21st Century:  The Delta Academy was created out of an urgent sense that bold action was needed to save our young females (ages 11-14) from the perils of academic failure, low self-esteem, and crippled futures. Delta Academy provides an opportunity for local Delta chapters to enrich and enhance the education that our young teens receive in public schools across the nation. Specifically, we help the girls to focus on their scholarship in math, science, and technology, and careers typically not held by women; their leadership by providing opportunities for service learning, and their sisterhood, defined as the cultivation and maintenance of relationships. A primary goal of the Delta Academy program is to prepare young girls for full participation as leaders in the 21st Century.

The symbol for the Delta Academy is the Dream Catcher.  In the spirit of the Dream Catcher, Delta Academy was created to: Catch the dreams of African-American adolescent girls, and to guide their dreams and aspirations to a successful future.

The MGCAC Delta Academy program follows our national initiative in preparing young girls along the MS Gulf Coast with activities that focus on computer training, self-esteem, etiquette, and non-traditional female careers. The MGCAC Delta Academy conducts activities such as:

            Δ Seminars/Presentations
            Δ Workshops
            Δ Tours and Field Trips
            Δ Community Service Projects

Monthly sessions start with orientation in September.  Monthly programs and activities continue through May. For more information about the Delta Academy program please visit our national website or contact one of our local sponsors or chapter members.

The Dr. Jeanne L. Noble Delta GEMS Institute, more commonly referred to as the Delta GEMS program, is a community service program of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.  This program centers on developing strong, confident and respectful young ladies by striving to prepare them to take active roles in their success and in the community.

A natural outgrowth and expansion for the continuation of the highly successful Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy, Delta GEMS, was created to expand the dreams of African-American at-risk, adolescent girls aged 14-18. Delta GEMS provides the framework to actualize those dreams through the performance of specific tasks that develop a CAN DO attitude. The goals for Delta GEMS are:
  • Instill the need to excel academically;
  • Provide tools that enable girls to sharpen and enhance their skills to achieve high levels of academic success;
  • Assist girls in proper goal setting and planning for their futures in high school and beyond; and
  • Create compassionate, caring, and community-minded young women by actively involving them in service-learning and community service opportunities.
The Delta GEMS framework is composed of forming a road map for college and career planning through five major components:
  1. Scholarship (Academic Excellence)
  2. Sisterhood (Self Esteem, Health Awareness, Leadership)
  3. Show Me the Money (Financial Awareness)
  4. Service (Social Responsibility through Community Service)
  5. Infinitely Complete
Topics within the five major components are designed to provide lessons and activities that provide opportunities for self-reflection and individual growth. Our Delta GEMS program has an emphasis on community service and this year's program is no exception. Activities include but are not limited to:
  • Volunteer Activities: Salvation Army Bell Ringing
  • Health Walk Participation
  • University/College Tours
  • Guest Speakers
  • Social Action Activities
Selection Criteria:
  • Female high school student, grades 9-12
  • Minimum GPA 2.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Mandatory Attendance
  • Community Service
